Richard Linklater takes audiences on a genre-bending journey in his latest film Hit Man. Co-written by Linklater and leading actor Glen Powell, Hit Man explores themes of self-identity underscored with equal parts romantic comedy and fast-paced action.

Loosely based on true events, the film follows Powell’s character Gary Johnson, a professor and part-time fake hit man for the New Orleans Police Department, as he navigates the balance between newly introduced alter-egos and personal life endeavors. Powell’s acting shines most notably through the characters he aims to portray while confronting unsuspecting, revenge-seeking clientele. From adopting new accents and mannerisms to morphing styles and facial features, Powell’s metamorphosis throughout this film keeps viewers exceedingly entertained. The relationship between Gary’s fantastical renditions of stereotypical hit men contrasts humorously with the reality of his demure, awkward nature. His final transformation as a character relies largely on this juxtaposition; guiding audience members through each stage of his personal development.

The introduction of Adria Arjona’s character Madison, a young wife attempting to place a hit out on her controlling husband, serves as a turning point in the film. As her relationship with Ron - one of Gary’s countless hit man personas - develops, the lines between fantasy and reality become increasingly difficult to identify. Arjona’s performance delivers a charming perspective to the film's events, leaving audiences wanting more of her quick-witted remarks and effortless humor. The pacing of this film lends itself greatly to these comedic moments and frequently makes moves to reinforce the overarching humor-driven plot.

However, many of these creative liberties frequently fall flat in light of Madison’s underdeveloped and overall one-dimensional storyline. Her role throughout the film is largely confined to two stereotypical female archetypes: a helpless, unprotected victim or the passionate, overly adoring lover - both frequently reliant on their male counterparts. Arjona’s character often acts on a whim and is hardly ever captured in a separate sequence outside of her romantic relationship with Ron. The lack of development for one of Hit Man’s few female characters significantly reduces the impact of its desired rom-com status.

In Hit Man, Richard Linklater succeeds in transcending multiple genres. Its timely pacing paired with engaging performances from Powell and Arjona respectively, aid the film’s ability to captivate viewers. Although the primary romantic storyline pales in comparison to more action-driven montages spliced alongside well-paced comedic elements, Hit Man nevertheless remains an entertaining watch for audiences of all kinds.
