The Uncut Gems Podcast - Episode 212 (Tears of the Sun)

The Uncut Gems Podcast

The Uncut Gems Podcast is a show where a bunch of like-minded individuals gather around a virtual table to discuss films that for one reason or another have become forgotten. Tongues pressed firmly in cheek, the team don their film historian top hats and rant from sedentary positions to hopefully conclude whether the film in question deserves to be covered by sands of time or if it is a classic in dire need of attention.

In this episode of the show Fuqua February continues with a discussion about his 2003 outing Tears of the Sun. Over the course of our conversation you will hear us try to understand what the mission behind this movie was, whether it was appropriate to transplant a real story into a whole new setting and whether the story in this new setting deserved to be treated as a cross between a prestige war drama and an actioner of the Rambo variety. We also talk about Bruce Willis's pull factor, Antoine Fuqua leaning into a post-Black Hawk Down aesthetic and how in the eyes of Hollywood producers Canadian special forces clearly look way less cool than Navy Seals.
